Blankets and water-resistant rain covers for horses have been in use for a many years. The purpose of the horse blanket is to protect the horse from rain and cold weather, often after riding, when the horses are overheated by exertion. This is where a waterproof breathable horse blanket will keep your horse dry and free of accumulation of moisture and sweat under the blanket.
The design of a waterproof horse blanket will include a mesh material for ventilation of the horse’s back while it is covered by the blanket. The mesh material below will be protected by a waterproof top cover that protects the mesh material and prevents water from wetting the horse and at the same time allowing breathing through the openings of the mesh.
The front edge of waterproof turnout horse blanket top cover is attached to the blanket along a front hem that encases a length of plastic piping sufficiently thick to provide a relief structure for raising the front edge of the cover slightly with respect to the blanket and the mesh material.
The top cover of the waterproof blanket is also stitched to the blanket around its sides and back edge. Thus, an air stream produced by wind or the horse’s motion is able to flow between the top cover and the mesh material to allow ventilation for the horse but at the same time protecting the horse back from the rain. The netting also adds as a protection from insects from getting inside the blanket.
